Mompa,
Mom’s Personal Assistent
Native Mobile Application Case Study
Concept and creation of a personal assistant mobile application for mom’s and families. iOS & Android
Year:
2020
Completion of:
MVP Prototype
INTRODUCTION
01 - PROBLEM
Moms hold a unique position. With busy schedules managing the kids, work, home, and finances, moms are often also responsible for the planning and keeping multiple people’s schedules in their family. They’re like their family’s personal assistant. But trying to remember the small things can be a nightmare. The challenge was to find a solution to an underserved problem, and help moms manage all the little things pertaining to their families.
02 - SOLUTION
A profile-based, personal assistant in the form of an application that helps to automate appointment, task and the management of one’s schedule to help make this aspect of a mom’s life easier – and more pleasant too! Utilizing pre-recorded information of each family member to make adding appointments to calendars and tasks to lists not only quick and easy, but more complete, all while keeping them visible when needed and listed until completed.
03 - MY ROLE
I constructed, researched, named, designed, and developed all aspects of the application’s UX/UI and prototype.
RESEARCH
I interviewed 4 moms individually with a variety of busy lives and framed my questions to allow them to delve deep into their average routine with their families. During these interviews, the moms shared insight on their pain points and desires to be more efficient with tasks, schedules and appointment keeping. I then analyzed the recorded interviews to identify patterns among the moms.
One of the main points that stood out was the need for more automation in their calendars, as well a reminder system that included an alarm notification that would be hard to miss.
04 - INTERVIEWS
I created infinity maps to help me identify patterns and insight from my interviews. I later used this insight to develop empathy maps and user personas.
05 - INFINITY MAPS
The empathy map’s main purpose was to find the common pressure points, habits, needs and desires of my target audience. This was done by developing two distinct empathy maps based on two different personality types discovered from my prior research.
06 - EMPATHY MAPS
I developed 2 personas based on my research. These personas were heavily influenced by the characteristics and commonalities of the moms I had interviewed.
07 - USER PERSONAS
08 - HOW MIGHT WE…
Automate adding appointments and tasks to a calendar and help minimize mental notes?
Help moms keep track of completed tasks and appointments?
Make digital calendars read easy and be visually appealing?
Help moms find pockets of time in their busy day?
IDEATE
09 - SOLUTION IDEA
Calendar Automation
Have the user create profiles for each family member and prelog information such as doctors, schools, etc.
Color code based on appointment type.
Have preset suggestions for the user to customize.
Allow the user to create unique appointment types as well as unique appointments.
Refer to sketches
Similar to shopping online, the “profile page” would be like the product category page where the user can select a member of her family to add an appointment. Once a profile is selected the user is taken to a profile detail page (similar to a product detail page) where you can choose options such as appointment type, time, set reminders and “Add to Cal” like an “Add to Cart” button.
INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
I created a map to show the basic flow-through navigation of the application for the MVP version of the application.
10 - APPLICATION SITE MAP
User flows were created for 3 red-routes for the initial prototyping. These routes went through various renditions to create an MVP that is simple and very easy to navigate.
11 - USER FLOWS
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Rough sketches went through testing and several renditions to to simplify the navigation of adding tasks and appointments to a list. The final ideation sketches were step-by-step instruction screens in the form of a conversation.
12 - SKETCHES
13 - WIREFRAMES
Sketches were then taken to Adobe XD to create clean wireframes to prepare for high-fidelity designs. Here, several small issues were addressed to better communicate with the user.
Dashboard
This screen allows the user to view their day at a glance and manage most tasks.
Profile Selection
User can select a profile of a family member to designated appointments and tasks.
Appointment Type
User selects an appointment type from the pre-loaded list assigned to each family member.
Calendar View
Calendar view pops up to make a selection. Each day selected also displays the list of appointments already assigned to that given day.
Date & Time
Add a date and time for the appointment.
Save Appointment
User is given the option to add any additional notes before saving.
Profile View
All tasks, appointments and profile information for each family member is listed here.

VISUAL DESIGN
15 - MOOD BOARD
Brand Personality
Mompa is light-hearted and charming with a sense of empathy to help moms get through the day-to-day in their own way.
Image Inspiration
The images I chose are meant to represent lightheartedness, family and love.
They have a sense of warmth and colors that are soft and not intimidating.
I wanted to express the many stages of motherhood amongst different cultures to show that this can apply to any demographic of motherhood.
16 - LOGO DESIGN
The Mompa™ logo is made up of a simple and charming typeface with the initial “M” formed in to an elephant. The elephant embodies the phrase “the elephant never forgets” and symbolizes nurturing, protection, and motherhood.
Primary - teal
Used in most branding and promotional materials. The main logo seen on any documentation with white backgrounds where branding can be scaled at a primary size
Primary - white
Used mostly on branded applications such as the Mompa app splash screen, brand style guide cover, etc.
Logo - stand-alone
Used in headings of the main application and website. Can also be displayed in white if the background is teal.
M-mark
Utilized anywhere that a logo icon would be more appropriate than the full logo - including social media, page marks, app thumbnail and other small spaces.
17 - COLORS
Main brand colors are used for the graphic elements and illustrations. Layout colors are used for the main wireframe backgrounds and text. Interacting colors will be used for all buttons and links.
18 - UI ELEMENTS
Primary action buttons uses the Mompa Mauve colors. Other atoms such as drop downs and form sections uses the soft light and dark grayed colors while button groups use the primary teal and dark teal colors.

SUMMARY
21 - FEEDBACK
During the usability testing phase of this project, participants found the application to be very intuitive and easy to use. More importantly they could see the value in having an assistant application geared specifically towards moms, parents, and care takers.
22 - LOOKING AHEAD
Although what was shown in this study was the targeted MVP, I have greater plans for this application which will include the capability to sync to external calendars such as Google Cal, daily/weekly schedules, meal planning and shopping lists. I want this app to be a one-stop-shop for moms to help them remember the important little things while caring for their loved ones.
"Adeola’s consistent and incredible design work exceeded expectations and showed her detail-oriented, passionate style which was highly recognized by our clients and users."
